This provoked a good discussion last night. The book addresses ‘the general puzzle of how we get from the mind to the world’ told in story as a dialogue between 43-year-old psychiatrist Michael and 22-year-old mathematician Alicia in seven recorded conversations in the autumn of 1972. The reader has only the words exchanged between the two protagonists, in which the prosaic butts up against the esoteric, from which we imagine Alicia’s world, her life, childhood in Oak Ridge Tennessee, precocious intellect and family loss. And so McCarthy launches us on this ‘sortie’ between mind and world with a ‘naïve’ compact that the talk is not ‘cant’, hypocritical, sanctimonious talk, but simply sets thoughts on a slant; tilts the world.
